Rabbit Bites onYouTube (cont.) Getting on the "most viewed of the day" page can be accomplished through browser refreshing and you don't even need to use your paws. You would think this would be hard to do but it can be automated through firefox extensions like this one, right off of the shelf. If someone sets this with 30 tabs open and goes to bed, they could wake up with one of the most viewed videos of the day. This would distort viewership numbers. We give some specific examples that look fishy on our Rabbit Bite's Blog. Getting
one of the "highest rated" videos and one of "the most discussed" videos of
the day could both be accomplished with multiple accounts. The normal ratio for
reviews to viewership is about 1:100 but many videos that rank highly for the
day, are 1:3 or 1:2. In our casual observation, this seems to happen most in the
morning, when we speculate that people are battling each other, jockeying for
position. On inspection, some accounts that make comments look
like they are dummy accounts: No videos, no
subscriptions, no favorites, no nothing. This would distort ratings and
demographics. Again, behold the
Blog. We tested these little tricks a couple of times a few weeks ago. They worked. Our account was recently closed. We are not sure if this is because of our activity or because staffers saw one of our amaazzzzing videos that lampoons Paris Hilton or Donald Trump (their sponsors). You can check those out in our Archive. We appreciate what YouTube has done to promote online video and think it is a cool site. They are probably busy working on these issues right now. Some things may be illusory, but like a great rabbit once said, "An illusion which is a real experience is worth having." 1 2 |
